An old idea for a Wild West character design I dug up in my imagination and I did a picture of him using ink microns in crosshatch:

And then I found this in my sketchbook, a newer recent idea of these two 'Oracle Babies'. They predict the future and actually have giant hollow glowing orbs for heads that are semi-transluscent. You can use them to dominate the whole of existence, but they themselves are about as innocent and neutral as a toddler. They have no intentions of harm to anybody.

I colored/edited my previous ink drawing in Photoshop, and have been playing round with some more multi-layering effects. Apologies for any view quality issues, tell me what do you think?

In other news, my fiance' and I are heading out to look for a house, we'll be looking at an open house next week and if nothing comes of it, more property auctions in the near future. Both excited, and sort of scared and sort of indifferent to the whole deal, I've never done this sort of thing on my own before and so its a brand new experience that I've no previous experience on. In any case, I'm hoping that I'll only do more art/get a lot more further opportunities to meet fellow artists/land a job there...or I hope at least not go Jack Nicholson on everyone's butt by the next month. Anyone with home buying experience wanna help give any useful tips to a newby like me, please do so.

The Refugees

I saw a picture on doctorswithoutborders.org that particularly moved me on the subject of displaced refugees who are right now due to many reasons all in camps around the world. Imagine literally thousands of people surviving on a gallon of water and cups of food a day if they get lucky, completely ontop of each other's body space. You put around ten people in a halted airport or subway system for nine hours, they get ready to eat each other. The picture struck me as almost dream like, this huge numberless mass of people's jet black bodies and faces all staring out from drapery shapes and rainbow colored hijabs or turbans or wearing tshirts, the effect was really interesting so I inked it and I am likely to color it later. I hope the image looks beautiful or just abstract, and not offensive or scary to anybody, I wanted to honor these brave people not alienize anyone.

They're only slight variations of the same image, but I just can't decide between the two! This is the third requested Facebook portrait. Originally a hand drawn ink portrait/paper collage that I then scanned and played around with on several layers and experimented with several effects in Photoshop. My screen's not really very big so I don't get a truly clear image. But I would like to think this may be print worthy in the future, or at least there's still something going for me in this mixed traditional/digital style.

Oh yeah, that's right, I DO have an art blog...

Sorry folks. Christmas/New Year madness and all that rot. This is an entry for a superhero contest run by Talenthouse. Hopefully even if I don't win I may expand on her universe someday in a comic book or something. (?) This is a mixed media artwork, a mixture of Photoshop, traditional drawing/paint media and paper collage. 'La Sombra' or Brazilian for The Shadow is a 18 year old heroine who is more of a vigilante-type of character, who takes revenge on the local crime syndicates and on the human trafficking rings of Rio de Janeiro who have kidnapped her sister for profit. Iara's powers are supernatural in origin, but her main ability is mastery of the martial art style known as capoeira. Capoeira was developed by colonial slaves who needed a way to defend themselves when they escaped, and you can check it out here:

A collage/painting made out of all the women's faces from one of my Italian pulp fiction comic books and an old issue of 'Nightman'. This one I was just cleaning my brush and lacking a rag or clean water I just drybrushed/wiped it off on a board here and there, eventually somehow it turned into a small abstract painting.

I'd love say that she's based on a boogeyman of my own childhood, but she's not. She is actually based on an old handed-down blue and black striped long sleeved shirt with exposed shoulder patches that ill fits me but I still love to death anyways.

I'm not sure if you could tell but her face is pale yellow, being the underside of a paper that had marker ink bled through. This technique of drawing something heavily in marker then going over the back side of the paper with new lines done in pen or india I just began experimenting with during my senior year. It's a fun way to make a creative solution out of all those annoying bleedthru marker pages that waste your notebook paper.

Sketches of a creature concept of mine called 'daggerbreed' that I really want to see used on a Magic:The Gathering card or the likes of someday. I loved these guys after having a nightmare about a bunch of them running wild on some kind of barbaric battlefield planet, where the only inhabitants were just discarded machines killing each other for supremacy. I dunno if the planet was once inhabited by a wiped out race of human beings or some other organic civilization, or if it was always a dead one from the start and they were just put there. Or built themselves from the ground up. Who knows?? Perhaps I will do an art book about them and all the other crazy mechanical creatures that are running amok up there.

My personal assignment while in Italy was to combine elements of a iconic Rennaissance painting with modern day contemporary culture. Being a huge fan of Batman: The Animated Series, I decided to run with that as it's inspired me to do loads of artwork, but ironically I never made until now I realized ANY ACTUAL Batman fanart of any kind. I shun fanart or real life people cos generally I prefer to do my own original ideas- but I LOVE these characters, and they were a blast to research and draw- and for homework, all I had to do was sit on my butt and watch cartoons on youtube!! How groovy is that! The idea was to take the famous old master painting in composition or theme, and somehow alter its characters or mood somehow while still being recognizable. The famous portrait diptych by della Francesca of the Duke and his Wife (you may recall him as the fat guy with a huge shnozz in the red hat) portrays his sitters facing one another in the same exact way. I wanted Joker to still be recognizable, but he had to have an aristocratic mellow expression, and not look too maniacal. It was a real interesting challenge to pin his face down. I had to pose for reference and take lots of shots of myself doing my trademark Jack Nicholson grins and various Harley expressions. My roommates sadly weren't Illustration graduates themselves and had no clue what I was up to, and when I explained, they just laughed at me like I was nuts. *grumble* the buggers... ~~

The Zodiac gals

Back in early in May while I was eating dinner with all my friends in a wonderful family restaurant in Florence, I had the random urge to create a series of Zodiac characters, and suddenly began doing them on the spot. I did it just for fun to start, but now I am thinking perhaps they might look really nice if they get digitally colored in Illustrator and maybe even may be successfully licensed someday, as art postcards or be used in a real Horoscope column or on tshirts or something. Who knows? :) Something you may find interesting is that I base most of the characters at least subconciously somewhat on certain actual people I know of who either physically or personalitywise completely exemplify that sign. (Leo for instance, is a caricature of my artist friend Elena, who has light blonde hair, is sweet, mellow, and confident, and likes to outreach to those around her, all basic Leo traits.) There's only Libra, Gemini, Aries, Virgo, and Leo so far, but don't worry, I am working on the others! I think either Scorpio, Capricorn or Pisces is next. Depends on my mood. ;) In case you're wondering: I happen to be a Libra. ^^ Go Libras!!

Hello everyone! In case you've just got here, welcome to my art blog! If you've been following me at all, I apologize for the long absence! I had lots of new projects, got finally my BFA and graduated, been to Italy for a month, then Massachusets, then work, so I've been all over the place! But I promise from now on that updates will be MUCH more frequent, at least once or more a week! (well, hopefully...) I just wanted to clear the slate and start fresh, get rid of all the unrelated or boring jargon I didn't feel was worth keeping up here without sifting through it all night.
